MUSIC REVIEW - BIG DAY OUT 1999

Phil Page is not a name you'll have come across very often here. It's not our fault, he just hadn't written anything. Breaking the trend, Phil takes a look at the Big Day Out for us...

  Review of big day out....

Mercyful fate - class, one of the highlights of the day...first band, Mercyful Fate, chunk like you wouldnt believe, solos in the style of ala malmsteen on one side and ala shredder on the other....superb, slight ringing problem with one of the strats, but exceptional, cant get them out of my head....wow.......eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Terrorvision - one word = boredom

Queens of the Stone Age - started slow, but every song got better and better and heavier....

Symposium - heavy, chunky riffs mixed with light melody, similar to the new korn/coal style, but with a different sound

Ministry, classic songs good, but just felt like a sample, live should mean, sounds live.....twang and all, good chunk in moderation sucks, not enough.

Ben Harper, excellent musician, but mis-placed at this event, i'd love to see him at a different festival, or a small gig, but mis-placed, arrangers sort it out mun.

Placebo, very good, but didnt seem to be used to a large, and i mean large stage environment, only a 3 piece, didnt help the size ratio

Metallica, quite possibly the worst start to a set ever heard, with a mess-up almost immediately by kirk, but credit where it's due, almost immediately after that, where most guitarists would have packed up and gone home, he pulled off the other songs with a lot of balls if you think his confidence at the start was zero.....overall metallica kicked ass from then on.....and played a few more oncores as well than usual.....which shows that they are human, but good guyz...peace.

introspect i would have to say that the day was tremendous, the camping was hard & unbelieveably cold too in the morning before especially at 5 o'clock in the morning....blinking heck it was krazy.....i can tell you more...but maybe on another day....peace

Oh, alright then... now

Symposium were good in places but what really made the day was the exceptional performance by Marilyn Manson and i can only reiterate the tremendous stage presence that can only be described as in your face......mental....dysfunctional........

Gareth & I thought it was great until he leapt off the stage and started kicking hell out of the crowd.......calling to them...no-one seemed to be intimidated by him either...they just called him a d**K head......and started fighting back.........he's got balls

Sepultura were heavy as hell..............mr green can only be described as the perfect front man for this band...........one moment he's moshing.....the other moment he looks like something from the predator..........all band members were showing face paint.......leaning towards a possible homosexual tendency.......ooopps......wrong
diagnosis....lets be controversial....I'll kick greens ass........NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
