Well strap me to a rack make me whimper if this isn't good fun. Carmageddon II - Carpocalypse Now (from now on referred to as C2) is the sequel to Carmageddon, a game where you drove around running over pedestrians and smashing up other cars with the pretense of actually racing them (yeah, right!).

So what's new in the sequel then? Lets run it and take a look. Erm, well basically its just more of the same but when a game is this fun - who cares! Anyway, for the uninitiated, come with me as I investigate the game.

Carmageddon II - Kick some ass

You begin the game with a choice of three 'races'. Once these are completed you get do do an obscure mission. On the first set this was simply do five laps in six minutes (not as easy as it sounds) but the second there is a mission to know satellite antennae out of commission (yes, on rooftops!). And I haven't got past that yet.

The actual racing involves yourself and usually five opponents in varying vehicles. The object of the race is to reach each checkpoint before the timer reaches zero to continue. True, you can race normally if you want but that sort of defeats the whole point of the game. Your best bet is to just spin around and tw*t the opposition into next week before the timer runs out. Should the timer be getting low the pulverising of a few innocent bystanders should top up the clock sufficiently.

The race ends in one of three ways:

  1. You reach all the checkpoints and finish the race (pussy)
  2. You destroy all of your opponents. (great fun!)
  3. You kill all the pedestrians (not very likely but possible in theory)

There are numerous bonusses to be collected around the level. These can range from cash which you use to power up your car or buy new cars, weaponry which can be used to attack other drivers or people/animals, comical effect such as massive head people or explosive people to name a few. These are great fun but you can lose track of time trying to collect them so care must be taken.

The game does support network play for up to six players - but only over a LAN. Bum.

The car handling is a little bit slippery but can be kept under control usually (I still think Colin Mcrae has the best control - it just needed more destruction!). The game could have really used a rear-view mirror as I often got vehicularly buggered without knowing although there is a radar which can be repositioned.

The graphics tend to be a littile too colourful for realism but are fine. The update did suffer from judder on my P200MMX with 3DFX card but the game was still fun, Crashes were spectacular and practically everything in the game can be destroyed including a lot of the buildings. One problem I had was when the music track changed the game update would grind to a halt briefly. This was irrititating and could have been fixed by turning the music off but I simply couldn't do that oh no!

Carmageddon II - Get your ass kicked

Ah yes, the music. When I've been driven in a car the drivers I travel with usually plump for rock/heavy metal music and this game follows that trend to the letter. Iron Maiden have supplied four tracks for use in the game and they are:-

  • Aces High (Ok so it was about aircraft but spinning around and killing fits)
  • Man on the Edge (About a man stuck in traffic who gets bored and kills a lot)
  • The Trooper (About a man who kills a lot)
  • Be Quick or be Dead (say no more)

The tracks really get the adrenalin pumping and fit perfectly. For those who aren't partial to a bit of Heavy Metal a number of other tracks are included by Sentience.

I really enjoy playing this game however in the UK the red blood and people have been replaced by green blooded zombies. A quick trip on the net soon fixed this though and I must say I am all the better for it ha hah ahah ahhahaha ahahhaha ahhaah ahahahha ahhaha ha. Wombat.

8/10

Good fun but I wonder if it wears thin after a while. Not yet it hasn't!
