ALBUM - METAL JUKEBOX
With a new album rescued from being bought by somebody with more sanity, Rob takes a look at Helloween's Metal Jukebox and goes all sort of retro. More than usual actually... | |

She's a Man - Scorpions Released in 1999 - recorded at Fixitinthemix and Crazy Cat, Hamburg and Mi Sueno, Tenerife Released on Raw Power/Castle Music. Having heard The Time Of the Oath previously and enjoyed it, I was a bit unsure about this one. Especially when I saw the track listing. I mean, Abba and the Beatles rubbing shoulders with Cream and Tull! Whatever next I exclaimed! I shouldn't have worried really because this is a great covers album. All of the covers show that the 'Ween are not afraid to 'do their own thing'. Apart from the mighty Bowie's Space Oddity which remained spot on to the original, all of the others bore the hallmarks of these renowned musicians. I was also pleasantly surprised with a very Helloween-like cover of ABBAs Lay All Your Love On Me which had speed, solos and great drumwork from Kusch. Even All My Loving was turned into speed metal! The reason I personnally bought this thought is track 7. Now, when I was a small boy (I'd say around 5/6) I would put my Dad's Focus Live At The Rainbow album onto the Hocus Pocus track at full blast. I would then proceed to dance around to the mayhem (there is no other word for this track!) and probably put it back on about ten times until weary. Strangely enough, I did now too! Unlike Metallica who covered a song which nicked the riff from this, Helloween play this perfectly. And just as insanely! I won't spoil this album by telling you about it but I will finish by saying that if you have only heard one Helloween track in your life that was OK and you are partial to the rock of the previous 4 (!) decades, then get this. It's great. 9/10 - The best covers album that I've heard. |
