Computer Music

Take me back to the great days when you could actually remember a piece of music from a computer games. As a piece of nostalgia, Rob takes a look at the greats of our time, and a few honkers that he wrote too...

Rob's top tens of Computer Music.

With computer music being absolutely forgettable nowadays (with one or two exceptions), I thought I'd give you lists of my personal favourites. Hopefully, I'll have remembered who wrote them by the time that you read this!

Favourite Musicians (Top er… 14)

1.Tim Follin - Excellent harmonies and a unique style makes his music the best in my book. But closely followed by the mighty…
2.Rob Hubbard -
8 bit master of squeezing more channels out of 3/4 than anyone.
3.David Whittaker -
Very close to Mr.Hubbard especially as he has done 16-bit work too like Xenon II.
4.Chris Heulsbeck -
Influenced heavily by Jean Michel Jarre but an excellent 16-bit (mainly) musician providing some of my faves.
5.Richard Joseph -
Did music for Cannon Fodder, James Pond, GODS and tons of others. A 16 bit god.
6.Martin Galway -
Provided many of the C64s most famous tunes. Used a lot by Ocean software.
7.Jonathan Smith - Doing a hell of a lot of tunes, mainly for Ocean/Imagine software in their heydays.
8.Allister Brimble - Worked mainly with Team 17 but did some 8-bit work to start with.
9.Jas C.Brooke -
Didn't do much that I know of but what I did hear was good.
10.Brian Jobling - One of the gurus at Zeppelin Software, some brilliant Atari 8-bit music. He even wrote to me once to say that mine was good! Woohoo!

I've run out of musicians that I know, so I'll add my mates and I. We write/wrote music. In no particular order of greatness, the charts for these will be below…
11.Rob Hewitt (Coagulus, The Master of Puppets, Hewie) - Over 300 pieces of music. Some of it quite good actually! Some not!
12.James Vaughan (JV, Jimbob, Dr.Death) - Over 100 pieces of music that I know of.
13.Owain Vaughan (Oglord, Oggy) - Ditto as I can't remember who wrote what.
14.Jason Witts (Thermite, Pazzuzus, Q, The Witts…..)- Over 30 pieces of music - probably a lot more knowing him.

And a special mention to Bismuth, who used ProTracker to create the drums (replayed using PC FastTracker later)

Spectrum 48
1.Agent X - Tim Follin. FIVE CHANNELS on a Spectrum 48 and sounding like no other tune before it, this was great! A bit too hissy on emulators though.
2.Future Games - Mastertronic. Very Tim Follin-esque in fact, I'd be surprised if it wasn't him. Second only to Agent X.
3.Sidewize - Hewson. - Great SEU title tune for a pretty cool Speccy SEU.
4.Grand Prix Simulator - Dave Whittaker.- Simple tune but very catchy.
5.Super Robin Hood - Allister Brimble.- Irritatingly catchy, done very nicely on the Amiga later

7.1943 - US Gold / Capcom - A good arcade tune done on the Speccy pretty well.
8.Fruit Machine Simulator - Dave Whittaker - Bouncy, knees-up style tune which needn't be there. But I'm glad it was.

2.One Man And His Droid - Rob Hubbard. Awful game, great music!

4.Gyroscope - Martin Galway - Eerie but entirely fitting. One of the first C64 tunes that I heard.
5.Commando - Rob Hubbard / Capcom - Hubbardised version of the Arcade music.
6.Monty on the Run - Rob Hubbard. - Typical Rob Hubbard but it's hard to tire of him!
7.Delta - Rob Hubbard. - I rest my case! They even named an Amiga music proggy after it. Delta Music! Everyone with an Amiga has heard this.
8.Ghouls And Ghosts - Tim Follin - How he made rain and a scream I don't know. Great!
9.LED Storm - Tim Follin - So much bass! Even if it was Smoke on the Water's intro. Great music on the map screen. Crap game!
10.Netherworld - Hewson - Electric guitar samples and drums. If you don't have the dark brown c64 then hear it on an emulator as the samples don't work on the cream coloured ones.

A great version of the music familiar to RType fans on all systems.
3.Turrican -
Slightly bleepy but can't hide the fact that the music is great
4.Dragons Curse -
Another SEGA original tune made better by the PC Engine's sound hardware.
5.Out Run
- Actually better than the Megadrive version again!
6.GunHed -
Pure, classic shoot em up music.
7.Shoot em up I like but can't remember - was like GunHed though
8.1943 -
Not the great Capcom original tune, but a good musical rant nonetheless.

And now, the ones that were left behind (probably some of these will be in the Download section) by mates and myself

By Myself. - If not in DOWNLOAD, then they'll be uploaded yesterday (soon) - (Using ProTracker unless stated)
1.Peaceful Chaos - An 8-channel OctaMED module, the only one I ever finished with 8 tracks.
2.Jethunt Soundtrack - An atmospheric echoing game soundtrack for a game that never was (yet)!
3.Terrestrial Truth - In the download section
4.FastGame - In the download section
5.Arising Again - Turkish Delight ad meets the Karate Kid, You'll know what I mean someday!
6.Sanity Devastation - Written for Bismuth originally but the tune was added as well as the drums. Sung badly over in the Download Section. Will be good once I work out how to sing the blooming thing (not like that anyway!),
7.Earthtune - In the download section
8.Abomb Title - A weird lingering synth backs a mellow but full tune (er, it's just a tune Rob).
9.Newrythmn - In the download section - I never could spell rhythm (probably because I never had any!).
10.Heavy - Can't remember the name but the Electric guitars were cool

By Bismuth (Not strictly computer music - but the drums were/are made using ProTracker/FastTracker!!!)
1. Aggressive Executioner - Groovy, doomy power metal with a rock twinge at the edges. This is my favourite BI song.
2. Psychotic Mind - Fast, catchy, sod to play and sing, git of a song. And I tried an awful solo for it recently!
3. Gutfest - The first BI song ever, written in an afternoon yet is still good!
4. A Burial to Bury All - Death metal veneer (vocals) hides a bluesy-rock undergarment (rhythm).
5. Sick Sense - If only I could remember how it went, bl**dy hard work playing though, but not as tough as…
6. Sanity Devastation - only ever played by James and myself once! Trying to finish a solo version. Hear a bad version in the Download Section.
7. A*T*O*M*I*C*I*D*E - written and sounded good but never recorded/finished! Acoustic intro played by me! Riffs which irritated mates of mine for weeks by sticking in their heads!

By the Vaughans (Owain and James) using Archimedes ProTracker, TechTracker and Tracker (first two trackers were written by them!)
1.CCBeat - So good I did a version of it from memory after 2 years and it still had the right tune! This is 80s retro style fun.
2.Gitmix -
Possibly the strangest tune they ever did
3.On The Edge Don't F (He'll curse me for writing the title like that!) -
Owain's heavy metal 'epic' (well, it was bloody long if a little repetitive!)
4.Try643
5.Dubmix 4 -
Don't ask, but it was good, Features, James, Owain, Louise and Jeff on 'vocals'! "Wot a pity!". A Cruel but funny joke with a good tune.
6.Jim At Aston
- I'm sure that this was good but I can't recall how it went! Hope we get 'Jim In Florida' soon but I doubt it!
7.Dubmix 3: Get Out of This - Along with me, This was one of the best. I would say that though wouldn't I? Cruel but funny also. Poor Dub, he went through some sh*t from us in this part of history.
8.Snowfield - I can't actually remember it but I think it was quite good.
9.Try512 - This was six track, so you cant have it!
10.Vaughansmix - I wrote this, using samples of them so it goes here. It was crap though although Owain likes it!

By Jason Witts using ProTracker on Amiga and Archimedes
1.Skulldriller - Metal Module with singing also!
2.Beepo Cutesy - yep, as it says but with a dance 'edge'. This is very strange but catchy.
3.Skulldtunes - Collection of Metal segments for the unfinished game. Still very strange though.
4.Phlegm - Written with me, this one was very strange indeed.
5.Oral Passage - Probably one of the worst tune I ever did, but Mr.Witts was on 'vocals' so it goes here.

Arcade
1.Out Run - Sega - I bet anyone who's played this can remember the music. Very Lambada!
2.Space Harrier - Sega - Another memorable arcade meisterwork.
3.Afterburner - Sega - Guitars! About time!
4.Commando - Capcom
5.1943 - Capcom
6.Star Wars - Atari/Tengen - crap, but really does take me back when I hear it on MAME! Love that John Williams stuff!
7.Enduro Racer - Sega
8.Bubble Bobble - Taito
9.720 Degrees - Atari/Tengen
10.Super Hang On - Sega

Modern Music (I had to as some are good)
1.Ed Hunter (PC)
- alright so it’s a pile of Iron Maiden songs - yay!!!
2.Soul Blade (PSX) - The best intro music ever. Cheesy as hell and loving it! Like a Japanese action series title sequence!
3.Carmageddon II (PC) - Umm, Alright so it's mostly Maiden again!!
4.Dark Forces (PC) - Sounds great on a new sound card (thus making it modern -see!). Love that John Williams stuff!
5.Wipeout (PSX) - I may not live pop/rave/dance/ambient/whatever, but these fit the game perfectly.

I was going to add a worst music of all time but that wouldn't be fair really. Some tunes sucked because of the replayer routine and not the musician and sometimes there wasn't enough memory to write a better version. So that went out of the window. I haven't really given up on music but I don't get as enthusiastic over a soundtrack as I used to. Which is a shame. I now have to get permission to upload the Vaughans music as well as get more of my own on here!

The views expressed here are simply those of Rob and nobody else. He's a bit strange but he knows what he likes!
