EMULATOR REVIEW - ZX32

Ah, the Spectrum. Clive Sinclairs little bundle of joy. Colour clash, beeper, 48k of memory, loading off tapes, no joystick. Those were the days eh! Rob takes a look at ZX32, an emulator of that little marvel.

  Program: ZX32
Type: Spectrum emulator
Version Reviewed: 1.01
Platform: Windows (may be 3.1 but I think it’s 95/98/NT4 only)
Requirements: DirectX 3 and above, 486 and above
Recommended: P133 for fullscreen, P200 for windowed and fullscreen

ZX32 is a Spectrum Emulator. Big Deal eh, these have been around for years. This one lets you run spectrum games in a window on the desktop though (providing a welcome break from typing in web pages - oops). Between this and the Bleem demo I’m screwed. Therefore this is the last thing I’ll ty… …Oh well, suppose I’d better keep going.

Street Fighter II on the Speecy. In a window! And yes, I DO own the original for the speccy!

The feature this emulator has are :-

  • Control over task priority
  • FPS control and on window display
  • Z80 CPU speed control faster and slower (can make games a bit tricky or slow games like Out Run playable)
  • Joystick emulation of all major Speccy interfaces/standards for PC keys and joystick
  • TAP, Z80, SNA, SP file format support with TAP browsing
  • Spectrum 48/128 emulation with full sound support under DirectX
  • Saving of snapshots
  • Switching between full-screen and windowed

As you’d expect with a Spectrum emulator, the emulation is practically flawless. There are a large amount of options to control the update and CPU speed of the soectrum. Very few Speccy programs used the full 50/60hz frame rate (usually half that at least) so you don't get that slight shearing you get with emulators of consoles with flawless updates. As you can see above, in the windowed version there is some nice info onscreen. This emulator is a little CPU hungry considering Bleem emulates a playstation and does quite well! But modern PCs shouldn’t have much of a problem.

Apart from a lack of supported formats. This emulator is fine. And free. Pick it up from xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

7/10 – In truth it is a simple Speccy emulator but it’s probably as good as you’ll ever need. And totally free so far.

STOP PRESS (Eh, on a website!) - Just as I put this review up - ZX32 version 1.03 came out with a host of new features. I'll take a look at them in detail soon but suffice to say that the score is now :-

8/10 – Probably as good as you’ll ever need. More features and formats than before. And still totally free..
