EMULATOR REVIEW - ZX32
Ah, the Spectrum. Clive Sinclairs little bundle of joy. Colour clash, beeper, 48k of memory, loading off tapes, no joystick. Those were the days eh! Rob takes a look at ZX32, an emulator of that little marvel. | |
Program:
ZX32
Type: Spectrum emulator Version Reviewed: 1.01 Platform: Windows (may be 3.1 but I think its 95/98/NT4 only) Requirements: DirectX 3 and above, 486 and above Recommended: P133 for fullscreen, P200 for windowed and fullscreen ZX32 is a Spectrum Emulator. Big Deal eh, these have been around for years. This one lets you run spectrum games in a window on the desktop though (providing a welcome break from typing in web pages - oops). Between this and the Bleem demo Im screwed. Therefore this is the last thing Ill ty Oh well, suppose Id better keep going.
The feature this emulator has are :-
As youd expect with a Spectrum emulator, the emulation is practically flawless. There are a large amount of options to control the update and CPU speed of the soectrum. Very few Speccy programs used the full 50/60hz frame rate (usually half that at least) so you don't get that slight shearing you get with emulators of consoles with flawless updates. As you can see above, in the windowed version there is some nice info onscreen. This emulator is a little CPU hungry considering Bleem emulates a playstation and does quite well! But modern PCs shouldnt have much of a problem. Apart from a lack of supported formats. This emulator is fine. And free. Pick it up from xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 7/10 In truth it is a simple Speccy emulator but its probably as good as youll ever need. And totally free so far. STOP PRESS (Eh, on a website!) - Just as I put this review up - ZX32 version 1.03 came out with a host of new features. I'll take a look at them in detail soon but suffice to say that the score is now :- 8/10 Probably as good as youll ever need. More features and formats than before. And still totally free.. |
